I'm still using my S10e and will need a replacement soon, so I'm glad to have this option. I understand why large phablet phones are popular. For many people the phone is their default device for accessing the net. For some it's their only device for net access. I'm provided by my employer with a laptop/LTE. I have my own laptop. I have a couple of high end desktops at home. For me the phone is a peripheral device. I prefer a phone that fits into a pants side pocket and can be operated with one hand.

As someone who works at tech sales, a lot of people wish they had proper options for small phones. The Zenfone 10 is pretty much a perfect phone in regards to what I would want from a phone. And judging by the amount of questions I get regarding smaller phones, if they made like a Zenfone 10 Lite with some reduced specs at 599 or 499, that phone would sell like crazy. But extreme kudos to Asus for keeping up with the Zenfone series and keeping it small when everyone else is going bigger.

Zenphone 9/10 have been the two phones that showcase you can have a small phone with major flagship specs while it not having have to be so big. I personally love a smaller phone. Far easier to travel with, super quick to top off (generally due to smaller size), and in this years case wireless charging. If I didn't have an S23 Base, I would of definitely grabbed this instead.

I have mad respect for Asus for believing in the right thing. How consistently they’re trying to innovate compact phones. I use an iphone 13 mini and words don’t do justice to my user experience. It just feels right. My girlfriend has an iphone 13 pro and its battery backup is almost similar to mine. Also, her battery health is falling faster than mine although I abuse my phone when it comes to charging habits. It is so funny to me when someone says bigger phones have bigger screen for details. Sure, a movie formatted for an IMAX screen looks exactly same and detailed in a 7 inch phone but if you scale it down 1 more inch it’s a disaster 😂 As per this logic 8 inch phone will have better display, camera and battery. 10 inch one will be even better. Go bigger! Sure a bigger screen has benefits but at what cost? A phone has become already an extension to human body these days, and let’s make them as big as possible to immerse ourselves into the black mirrors.

Life is about balance. And most if not all prefer larger phones that gives them added functionality despite their drawbacks. Thats why most companies are dropping their compact size for bigger variants. The demand for smaller phone is just not there except for a small niche market. Similar to gaming phones like rog gaming phones.

In the era of small android LED Tv's that aren't day to day user friendly, what Asus is doing is brave and definitely worth every bit of appreciation. Love Zephone 10. I'm still using my Pixel 4a for the small form factor and my options are running out as Google is making phablets these days. Thank you Asus for making the perfect phone for the small form factor phone enthusiasts. I have Asus monitors, Asus Tuff mobo, Asus Graphics card and I'm definitely getting this Zenphone 10. I just switched away from my Pixel 4a and the only options I saw and felt comfortable in my hand were the Motorola Edge 30 Neo (very slightly longer but same in-hand feeling), and Sony's Xperia 5/10 line (slightly more narrow and longer). These were literally the only options. Then the Zenfone got announced, but I wasn't going to spend upwards of $600 (equivalent, I'm in Sweden) on a phone so I ended up with a lightly used Xperia 5 IV at around $300 from a serial upgrader since I wanted decent wireless charging and a tele lens if possible. At an actual midrange price, the Motorola & Xperia 10 are the only choice.

Last year I upgraded from 4.6inch Sony Xperia XZ1 to Asus Zenphone 9 and I find this phone to be an absolute limit to what I would consider comfortable to carry around. It's a really good phone overall, maybe just a little to big for my taste :) Screen is large enough for every day use like practical internet browsing and watching youtube video from time to time. I much prefer it siting relatively comfortably in my pocket, than some flat screen TV reminding of it's existence there all the time. If Asus won't follow others and will keep this route, most possibly my next phone will be Zenphone 11 or 12

I miss smaller phones. Yeah, big screens are nice but one handed usability and fitting comfortably in a pocket is more important to me. Plus, the screen is usually the biggest power user of the phone so having a little bit smaller battery isn't as big of a deal. Especially since phones actually don't actually use as big of batteries as they could.

Ever since upgrading from my Pixel 3a to my Pixel 6 I've strained my hand so many times trying to reach things with one hand, which is just the way I naturally and instinctively use my phone, especially if it's quickly sending a reply or acting in a notification. If this phone was £100 cheaper, had a better camera system and was a Nexus or play edition style device which revived Android upgrades as soon as they're available I would've bought it in a heartbeat, it would be my perfect smartphone. I really wish there was a Pixel like this.

I'm still using my Sony XZ1 compact as my daily driver and as my gaming phone for emulators. It has a perfect size in my opinion. Anything more than that is not pocket-friendly and not for me. The battery life is still great despite it's very small by today's standarts - 2700mAh. In conclusion, there're people who're not fans of giants screens, so I hope manufacturers will continue to produce good options in this niche.

I have been considering putting mine back into daily use, actually. I retired it to my drawer of former technological friends because the gps crapped out, and that is a key feature for me. But I stopped carrying my current phone a lot of times as it's just too damned big, so I often don't have gps with me anyway. The battery life on that thing is insane, too! I had to charge it every 2 or 3 weeks depending on use, while my current phone needs juice every 5 or 6 days (almost twice the battery size, same amount of time in standby, it's just a pig). Oh and I can actually make calls on it comfortably. I think you talked me into it - thank you!

I'm not sure the tech is quite there, and there will always be associated compromises, but I think the mini phones of the future will follow the Razr design. The thing I don't get is why they are SO small. Make it a bit bigger and the cover screen becomes usable for most things, then the flipped open screen actually becomes bigger than a fold style once accounting for the useless black bars on a square screen.

Now I want to get back to the modern world but I want a small phone that isn't super expensive and the base Pixel 7 regularly goes on sale for just under $500 (Currently $449) while this Zenfone is $700 and an extra $50 if you want better storage or to have a color. I think we should appreciate the fact that someone still cares about compact phones and still manage to cram up all the good things in it. I love compact phones the likes of which were felt in Pixel 3 a, and it was a lighter phone too, making it minimal to carry and gives it minimal aesthetic altogether. Don't use screen sizes as a measurement. Back then most phones were 16:9 with huge bezels. But now, we got curves and different aspect ratios so it really doesn't make sense to use screen sizes. Extreme example, the phone with a 7.92inch screen is actually smaller than a 6.7inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. That phone is a Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha and it has a wrap around screen.

It's hard to get right, but it can be done. I don't think the Zenfone 10 is the best example for a great small phone, although it is pretty nice. I'm not a huge Samsung fan, but with the S23, they just nailed it: Barely larger case than the Zenfone 10, but still a bigger screen, 3 great cameras, awesome performance and decent battery life. The only reason I'd accept a much bigger size is sustainability. So now I'm torn between a refurbished S23 and a Fairphone 5. The Samsung has long support and great performance, so as long as it doesn't break, I'd be able to use it for years. My current phone is a Pixel 6 Pro, and it has a very bad display issue. And it's the maximum size I could handle. The Fairphone 5 is the same size, has even longer software support than all competitors, and I could repair it by myself. I think its performance would also be fine for me for the next 4-5 years, but I don't know for sure. But their idea and business model is something that I just love and can only support.

I love my iphone mini and wish they made a comeback! the normal iphone gives me hand cramps when I use it for too long. However a lot of people tell me that they bought the normal iphone because the mini was the same price with less battery life and they thought it would also be missing other features even though it's pretty much the same as the normal iphone

With the other advantages (as well as disadvantages) that comes with the mini phones (got 13 mini), the one huge, big facto reason I love smaller phones compared to the average size nowadays is… So easy to put in pockets and take out. Need to take a photo? Whip it out. Want to store it away in a tightly packed bag? Boom, just slides in. Yes, watching, reading, drawing, gaming is harder, but at the same time, the small size actually makes me not want to do it, which is better as I want to rely my phone as the sole device I use.

I have the Zenfone 8, here's my 1 year later review : - The phone is overall looking good and also quite solid ( I had to repair the screen cuz the phone fell off my pocket, 212 € for the reparation ). There's scratches on the front ( very small ones ) that doesn't catch the eye from a normal distance. The back have no scratches like the camera, all good. - The UI is very simple, not too much. Very smooth even in 60hz. I must mention the ghost touches that happens in my pocket when I'm walking which is kinda annoying. Sometimes, the smartphone tends to freaking out idk why like the phone is possessed. That'll be the major bad of the phone. - The photo quality is meh, nothing really stands out, same for videos, barely the minimum. - The battery and the battery care parameters works really well ( always charging under 90% ), the battery health is still the same as the first time using the phone. Talking about the battery, it's 50/50. I can pass the whole morning, afternoon but not the evening ( i must charge it at 8 pm ) while using it kinda heavily ( 1 hour of heavy gaming + 3 hours of music streaming + 2 hours of social media ) in data mode. But hey, I talk about a 2 generation old phone. I'm happy with it ( partially because if bugs ) but it got a small form factor. The Zenfone 9 and 10 are as good as Samsung's s22 and s23. Im just worried about bugs that can appear after 1/2 years after the purchase.

I was a big-phone user, but i'm also a serious runner, doing at least 10km per day. The big phone just became heavy and... annoying. I also wanted IP68, for the rhe phone to be able to survive rainy or humid runs. So i tried up a second-hand (refurbished ) Samsung S10e, and loved it! I'm now onto my third S10e (yes I also tend to break phones), and still love it. It's got everything i need tech wise, and just a much better form factor for what i need. Plus two other important points. As the model is now "old", they're cheap as chips. And as I'm also a keen traveller, i LOVE its DEX system which allows me to travel sans-laptop.

My first smartphone was a Samsung S4 Mini. It went out of date VERY quickly, many apps would not update over only a year. My most recent phone was a Kyocera DuraForce Pro2 running Android 10, which is a smaller phone that I really enjoyed, but it won't go 5G. I got the next generation UW 5G model, and it's about 16mm larger. I hate it. It has the same processor, and the extra battery capacity really isn't that big of a deal. It's Android 11 and the native apps like the alarm clock were changed for absolutely no reason. I'm waiting for prices on the Pro 3 to come down, and I'm hoping they went back to the smaller form factor. It's a ruggedized phone targeted at tradespeople, so pocketablity SHOULD be a primary concern.

After having big phones for the last 3 or so years, I've decided to go back to a Samsung Galaxy J3 I kept mainly because of size (and weight). It's got a 5-6" display, and even though the battery sucks and it's an, overall, outdated phone by now, I prefer it. I've kept one of the bigger, newer phones I've got for work and all that, but if any good budget phone came out with a smaller display, I'd switch to it in a heartbeat.

@David No-one is buying the Plus either by the looks of it so it wasn't just size. If they had the zoom camera in the Mini (which I use at work a lot) and 120Hz display, I would have got that over the Pro mid-size one. I have a Mini that I don't use and still love the size and weight of it each time I hold it. Also little things, like using one-handed or going for a run or ride are easier with a compact phone.

@P L The regular Plus didn’t sell because for just 100 bucks more you can get a Pro. If your assumption is correct that the Mini didn’t sell well for other reasons than its size then it should have still sold more than the regular 12 and 13. But it didn’t, it sold far less than them despite having the same features and being cheaper.

2 ай бұрын
P L

@David Over here the 14 Plus is £849 and the 6.1 Pro is £1099, Pro Max is £1199, so it is not just £100/$100 difference. Though most people seem to buy on contract for crazy monthly costs and I suspect that paying 'a bit more each month' to get the Pro or Pro Max is what ends up happening (even if it's completely false economy). My point was Apple seemed to assume people prefer big phones not small ones but the 14 Plus is not selling well either.

2 ай бұрын
David +2

@P L It’s not an assumption though. That’s what the sales show. They’re simply responding to the market which has made it clear that customers prefer big phones because they keep buying them. The 14 Plus is an exception not because customers think it’s too big, it’s because it was priced too closely to the Pro models.

I have a Pixel 6 phone now, but I still preferred my old Pixel 3, which was smaller because it was easier to hold. It was a narrower and lighter phone to handle. Then if you add a case, it makes the phone wider, so an already wide phone that barely fits your hand will feel uncomfortable to hold for long if it has a case on it. It just seems unnecessary to me to keep making phones bigger and bigger. Might as well just use a tablet.

I just much prefer having a small device that is comfortable to hold/use, mainly because it's a communications device or gets used for randomly checking something online, basically I don't consume content on my phone - I have a computer or TV for that. The only thing that concerned me from the launch event was their talk of AI image retouching to make skies bluer and grass greener - that is probably the biggest con on this phone for me

I love and mis these smaller phones. If I see the regular Samsung S23 then I'm convinced that my next phone will be something like that. I force myself to hold on to my phone untill the updates stop so I have to wait a few years...🙃
