Probably one that runs windows or something else like Linux. The ROG handheld or the Logitech handheld would be good. If I didn't have to pay for it I would definitely get the steam deck.

@Ayan Rahman there I have to disagree with you, ROG might have better components, but what Steam has, is it's own software that was designed specificly with battery economy in it's mind and the support from the Devs, I am really curious if Cyberpunk will run on ROG Ally as smooth as on Steam Deck. Even tough the steam deck on paper is underpowered i would still pick it.

At first i thought you cant compare the switch to the ally, because one is a propietary handheld console and the other one a pc handheld allrounder but nonetheless this review was amazing and surprised me very much! I think that out there are enough reviews that compare the steam deck with the ally. Your review was all about the gaming experience on the go as a whole and that was it what made this video so interesting. Good job and keep up the good work! Being that the deck is only available from valve themselves and that the switch and alley will actually be sold in the same physical store is a huge reason they are more realistic to compare Where as no customer is ever gonna be looking at a deck on a store shelf and also have a switch to choose from there too

You should compare the Ally to the Deck. The Switch is hard to compare to a PC handheld considering it's not one, whereas the Deck is on the same level. The only similarities to all of them is that they're gaming devices and they're portable, which is honestly not enough to matter when there are so many other factors that do. Solid video tho

With the the ROG being bigger yh it would have more comfort but with a switch instead of changing the joycon colour with shell replacement and stuff You can also just get what they will normally call a protective case or shell So u can get ones that make the switch more bulking make it fluffy and all different textures some are expensive but you can also get them for cheap The one i have was £16-19 But you can get for for like 4-8 pounds as well! :)

Well, I do find the joycon are just nice and comfortable to use. 1 big advantage of those joycon is that I can easily replace them when they are damaged due to wear and tears. I can easily replace them with those cheaper 3rd party controllers on Shopee without sending the entire console for repairs. I bet you can't do that with the ROG.

Exactly, I like many Switch games, but Nintendo has been a toy company for over a hundred years. Their target has always been families with children, so they market to children. Asus is a computer component and hardware manufacturer who has never marketed to children. It would’ve been better to compare this to other handheld PCs.

A lot of the problems he is bringing up about the RGB is solved by the GPD Win, having a physical switch that connects a mouse OR an keyboard is leagues above the software switch they have on the Aya Neo and the RGB. Regarding the Asus Rog Ally, I'm really excited about its potential. However, I think I'm going to hold off on purchasing it for now and wait for further revisions to the hardware and software. As an early adopter, I've learned that companies often make improvements based on user feedback. Take the example of the improved fan in later orders of the Steam Deck. So, I believe it's wise to give Asus some time to refine their product before jumping in. Can't wait to see what they come up with in the future.

Switch games do go on sale. Many just snap back to their original retail price when not on sale. If you go the physical route, this is nice because when you're done with a game, you can recoup most of your cost ( or all of your cost if you got it on sale. ) Favoring physical, the Switch is the first time I've had games regularly trade-in for as much or more than I spent for them in the first place while we're still in its generation.

14:19 that’s all I ever wanted - Halo in your hands. Not cloud streaming but true dedicated hardware in your hands. I love this ROG device it reminds me of the Sega Nomad that I used when I was a kid so it’s nostalgic for me as well. But that 1.5 hour is ridiculous. I can game on my switch for hours no problem and with the large one piece controller I bought on Amazon that you insert the switch into, it fits perfectly in my giant hands. In the future if they get that battery life to 4+ hours while running the newest games buttery smooth, I will buy without hesitation. For now I’ll stick with my crappy looking doom eternal on the switch 😂

In terms of performance, rog is off to a great start, but that battery life is simply a deal-braker for a handheld/portable console. Since you're basically forced to have your Ally plugged in 24/7 if you want to play for a longer time, at that point you're probably better of with a PS5/PC. The battery kind of defeats the entire point of this device

The ROG Ally lacks several features that I use ALL THE TIME on my GPD Win 4, but sits at a similar price point... ooft. The main bonus of handhelds - other than handheld gaming - is super-low-power-usage docked gaming and computing. Also, if you are talking about accessories for handle PCs... you have to look at the Deck, which has an accessory ecosystem already.

@Natanael Alvarado for the pc gamers that can afford the price that is not a problem. About the SD cards, my ROG ally is working perfectly and I have no problems with the SD card. Also, ASUS is one of the world's best and most respected consumer electronics companies, so they should have good quality control, especially since the ROG is not a console but a handheld PC. @Héctor L. Peynado I have a switch but i can respect your opinion. It depends on person to person, nintendo isn't meant to be compared to serious gaming handhelds, they are family/kids-typish since family consoles is what they cater for. If they did really care they would definitely put alot of effort into the switch to make it that. Im not a serious gamer, and i like portability and like having friends play with me so yeah nintendo switch just suits me better than steamdeck, Aya Neo, Asus ROG Ally.

The comparison here was idiotic to say the least. Console vs PC Gaming handheld.. both built for a specific market. I love my Ally and didn't think twice about spending the money on it. I also spent around $400 upgrading it and adding accessories. I use my switch when I want to console game and my steam deck when I don't need the power but still want to game lightly. 9:33 Valve has done a lot of work for this kind of stuff specifically for years now. If you are playing on handheld, on TV or streaming, Big Picture mode should be used which changes everything to be useable with controller and touchscreen with more ease. What's shown on the video is regular Steam desktop overlay for games and that also completely changes when opening games through Big Picture.

Marioysikax

@Azenyr I feel like there's huge value for these devices to be used by regular people. Because if normie who only plays with Switch or phone picks this up, what is their experience with this device? So I feel like they would've almost done disservice with review by doing too much research as consumer would have to do same research, just the framing of the video "which is better" with scoring system makes these kind of factual inconsistancies pop up harsh. So what I personally think happened is that they just opened and used this device, which means they most likely used Asus proprierary software to manage and launch game - which then means even Steam games get opened through desktop mode. This is why Steam Deck is so praised as it's all Big Picture essentially and to go to desktop you have to specifically go to desktop, so even new to PC gamers would not have these kind of issues. I don't know if there is or if Steam can implement it so that external launchers can launch games in Big Picture mode instead, so people using this device as sold, using Asus ROG build in software like Asus intents, this might be a problem normie tier users get with their device unless they realize to stop using the launcher and use Steam Big Picture instead.

Plus the fact that he had games library on a tie had me burst out laughing. And on the same note on price including games, and accessories, most ppl already have a game library they can play out the box on ally and don't have to fetch out $50+ for a game like Nintendo and their accessories are no where near cheap. Ally would have more to come and third parties will start making plus existing things that already works with pc, works with Ally. ie Asus xg mobile gpu, external HD, keyboard/mouse.. heck u can turn it into a full on PC as your main and take it with you with just a usb c unplugged. @GraszI think he meant for game library what are the game options for that specific device. Not quantity, but what it is available. While the ROG has Steam and emulators, there are still other alternatives, while Nintendo is exclusive, you can't really play those games if you don't own one. Let's take in consideration that Arun owns lots of devices and lots of them are capable of running Steam, while the Switch is on its own. I totally disagree with him about prices, the switch is too much pricey than ROG+Steam games

Nintendo does have discounts, some times insane discounts, were a game costs 1-3 GBP before it goes back up after the sale is over. On the e-shop. There is also the resale value, as the cartidge retains more of it's value in the long run than a cd for example. You can just sell it after you are done playing it, if that is something you want to. You can also lend it to friend. You cannot do that with a download. Anyway, Great video as always. And as a casual player, a used Switch Lite for 100 was a easy choice for me. But you made it even more easy with poiting out the portability. Thank you.

Tip for the rog: uninstall as much crap from the system as possible or better yet find a "light windows" version , and make steam startup in big picture mode at startup (no need to mess with the small standard client look)

Important to note that the ROG is on the bleeding edge of tech. Give it a year or two, and a lot of these shortfalls will improve. Chips will become more efficient, the EV race is improving the quality and capacity of Battieries and more. I'd expect these devices to be more powerful, and use less energy, while having more battery capacity in the near future

you can talk about ROG controls without mentioning the stick drift. Almost all controllers with joysticks will eventually get stick drift. And as Arun said, with the switch you can easily buy new controllers or a pro controller for around 20 bucks. With the ROG you have to buy the new sticks from their website for $12 a pop (which comes out to $24 for two joysticks as opposed to the switches $25-$30 for two more fully functional controllers.) and you need to be tech savvy enough to take the thing apart and install them without braking anything. You can manage stick drift with electrical contact cleaner but, take it form me its a quick fix and you end up having to do it every time before you play. However if you are going to spend the money to fix them then the switch is definitely more bank for your buck, as you get two more controllers and can now play with two more people.

I feel it is fair to compare a Switch and the Rog. When I wanted a gaming handheld, my two top choices I agonized over were the OLED switch or the original OneXplayer. I ended up going with the 1000 USD OneXPlayer to save money. Yes the switch is cheaper to start, but I calculated I could buy 6 switch games and a 1TB SD card (to get same storage size) and the two systems would break even. That said, I have more backlog Steam games than I will play in my lifetime, far more than six AAA games.

I don't think the rog and the switch are competitors in the same consumer category to justify this match-up. Nintendo isn't really targeting the hyper invested gamers like the ROG brand in its entirety does. If anything, the ROG is in direct competition with the steam deck.

@Emma Madison true, but this was when a Portable PC was First Released into the Mainstream Market. Before the Steamdeck, Nintendo was the Sole Competitor of the Portable Console Market. But the Steamdeck revolutionized Everything because it offered PC Games with the same Portability of the Switch. This why the Steamdeck was Compared to the Switch, basically put, "Hey, we have a product that has the same Portability of the Switch...BUT can play PC Games". Now with the Ally it basically Needs to be compared to the Steamdeck because the Steam deck set the Universal Standard of Portable PC Consoles.

Glad you compared these two since everyone else is already comparing to the Steam Deck. Once the Switch gets easy CFW, it's going to be way better for a portable console. i think the accessories section was a moot point, not only is this device NOT OUT YET but it's also one in a hundred even among the hand held windows devices alongside that even with the switch's large cheap catalogue of accessories, anything running windows with bluetooth and/or a usb port will have 10x the accessory options personally when i get my ROG Ally I'm thinking of buying a pair of NReal Air glasses for an OLED almost-VR experience which is something the switch could NEVER hope to accomplish without the dinky battery pack NReal sells separately for like $80 to use them on consoles

Great video! I agree with all of your conclusions except for the "Game Library" one. To give that point to both of them is just ridiculous, in my opinion. The ROG can play pretty much every game on the Switch and every game on every other Nintendo console that came before it through emulation, as well as many other games in higher quality that have a PC port, plus all of the games that are only available on PC. Even with the caveat of "well games are always better to play natively rather than through emulation" (which is untrue in many cases), I just don't see how you could arrive at the conclusion that these two handhelds are in any way equal for this category lol

I’d need to see the ally in person to know if it works for me, but this is pretty tempting. Ultimately the Ally and the Switch are completely different devices targeting different markets. Switch is the only way to get full support on Nintendo exclusives but gives no access to PC titles. Ally is literally a gaming PC. They're not really competing against each other, in my opinion. I'd personally just buy both types of devices for different purposes. The Ally's real competition is the Steam Deck, as it's a handheld gaming PC as well, with a practically unbeatable price tag and a much smoother experience due to SteamOS. That would've been a much more interesting comparison video. For what it's worth, I still think the Steam Deck wins. Double the performance and a better screen isn't worth giving up everything the Steam Deck does just right and the continuous support it's receiving both from Valve and the community. The cheaper starting price of $400 is just the cherry on top. I'd much rather stick with the Steam Deck until it's due for its own hardware refresh than jump ships to the Ally. The ROG Ally arrived too little too late in my opinion.

I prefer the simplicity of the switch over all. Also you are right about pricing but their often a lot of sales that happen on the switch, cant count how many games i got when prices were slashed and i get 4-5 games for price of a full priced game.
